Ralph Benatzky's operetta, which premiered in 1936 at the Theater an der Wien (his seventy-seventh!), had made the young Zarah Leander a star overnight. Peter Lund's production at the Volksoper made Benatzky's musical comedy a star itself. Desperate reporter Axel Swift hopes to earn money and fame from a story about film diva Gloria Mills and breaks into her mansion. But he's not the only one showing up at the diva's abode that night...

"An artistic coup from a single source!", BR-Klassik praised the Volksoper for "Axel at the Heavenly Door" in September 2016 and awarded the Operetta Frog award. Benatzky's work is told "dusted and contemporary", "brave, different, new", "the old material can be recognized and experienced, but at the same time it can be understood from today's distance." Unanimous applause from the audience and critics and a TV broadcast of this Production sealed the success.
