Le chef britannique Wayne Marshall et le metteur en scène américain Daniel Fish, tous deux amoureux fous de ce que la comédie musicale américaine a de meilleur, s’emparent avec la chorégraphe Annie-B Parson de l’œuvre du compositeur de West Side Story Leonard Bernstein. Inspiré du célèbre conte philosophique de Voltaire publié en 1759, la création fut un « bide » à Broadway en 1956, avant que ce Candide et ses chansons n’entrent dans la légende.
Le mentor du jeune Candide, Pangloss, indécrottable optimiste, convaincu que « tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes possibles » ; l’indécrottable pessimiste Martin ; Cunégonde cent fois violée et cent fois renaissante ; la Vieille Dame et Cacambo, luttent pour survivre aux pires avanies, au long de numéros musicaux d’une invention formidable. Et s’il fallait, comme le conclut Candide, simplement « cultiver son jardin » ? C’est-à-dire son intelligence, son savoir et sa capacité critique, contre toutes les fatalités et toutes les croyances ?

British conductor Wayne Marshall and American director Daniel Fish, both madly in love with the best of American musical comedy, take on the work of West Side Story composer Leonard with choreographer Annie-B Parson Bernstein. Inspired by the famous philosophical tale by Voltaire published in 1759, the creation was a “bide” on Broadway in 1956, before this Candide and its songs entered into legend.
The young Candide's mentor, Pangloss, an incorrigible optimist, convinced that “everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds”; the incorrigible pessimist Martin; Cunégonde a hundred times violated and a hundred times reborn; the Old Lady and Cacambo, fight to survive the worst insults, throughout musical numbers of a formidable invention. And if it was necessary, as concludes Candide, simply "to cultivate its garden"? That is to say his intelligence, his knowledge and his critical capacity, against all fatalities and all beliefs?
