Carmen will die in the end. That is certain, both for the audience and for Carmen herself, who speaks of an inevitable fate. It is the fate of an attractive factory worker from Seville, a adored, self-confident woman. In Don José, Carmen meets a man who is hopelessly falling for her, but who also restricts her through his love. In the conflict between her freedom and this love, she chooses freedom. Don José cannot and does not want to accept that, he sees red – in the truest sense of the word – and kills Carmen. Today such an act is called femicide: women are killed because they are women. Men believe that women are theirs and that they have total power over them. Ultimately, anyone can be a perpetrator when it comes to love, rage, jealousy, obsession.
