The ballet script: EMIL STRUGARU, after the novel of the same name by PROSPER MÉRIMÉE

The impetus and reason for the creation of the ballet “Carmen” was the burning desire of Rodion Scedrin’s wife, the famous ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, to reproduce the strong, impetuous character of the passionate protagonist through dance. Since contemporaries considered that Scedrin’s version “insults Bizet’s masterpiece”, from which it started as inspiration, it was necessary for the composer Dmitri Shostakovich himself to intervene in order for the ballet to be found on the list of approval of the communist regime, an intervention that transformed it in Scedrin’s most famous work.

Before 1967, when the work was written, Maya Plisetskaya had approached Shostakovich with a view to composing the ballet, but the response was not up to her expectations; the composer offered him a confession and a justification at the same time: “I’m afraid of Bizet; everyone knows his music, so however you want to compose, you’re bound to disappoint.”

Respecting the same narrative thread of the opera, the Carmen ballet incites, delights, delights, being crossed by Bizet’s charming melodies, which Scedrin dressed up with extravagant sound effects and fascinating ornaments, proving to us, definitely, that it will not there was ever room for disappointment in the effect of his music.
“Carmen” will always charm you, with a love story carried through intrigues and betrayals, passion and revenge, alongside the sensual gypsy and her Don José, unique and eternal in the universal lyrical repertoire.

Impulsul și motivul creării baletului „Carmen” a fost dorința aprinsă a soției lui Rodion Scedrin, celebra balerină Maya Plisetskaya, de a reda caracterul puternic, năvalnic al pasionalei protagoniste, prin intermediul dansului. Deoarece contemporanii considerau că versiunea lui Scedrin „insultă capodopera lui Bizet”, de la care a pornit ca inspirație, a fost nevoie ca însuși compozitorul Dmitri Șostakovici să intervină pentru ca baletul să se regăsească pe lista de aprobare a regimului comunist, intervenție ce l-a transformat în cea mai celebră lucrare a lui Scedrin.

Înaintea anului 1967, în care a fost scrisă lucrarea, Maya Plisetskaya apelase la Șostakovici în vederea compunerii baletului, însă răspunsul nu a fost pe măsura așteptărilor sale; compozitorul i-a oferit o mărturisire și o justificare, în același timp: „Mi-e teamă de Bizet; toată lumea cunoaşte muzica lui, astfel încât, oricum ai dori să compui, în mod cert vei dezamăgi.”

Respectând același fir narativ al operei, baletul Carmen incită, delectează, încântă, străbătut fiind de fermecătoarele melodii ale lui Bizet, pe care Scedrin le-a înveșmântat cu efecte sonore extravagante și ornamente fascinante, demonstrându-ne, în mod cert, că nu va exista vreodată loc pentru decepții în ceea ce privește efectul muzicii sale.
„Carmen” vă va fermeca mereu, cu o poveste de iubire purtată prin intrigi și trădări, pasiune și răzbunare, alături de senzuala gitană și al ei Don José, unici și eterni în repertoriul liric universal.
