Peasant Honor (1890) and Comedians (1892) represent Italian verism, an operatic direction that, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, chose everyday truth, the harsh truth of instincts and passions, fear, hatred, jealousy, but also the truth of love and heroism. The musical language of both operas is engaging, full of change, contrasts and dramatic tension. And so are both stories set to music: Comedians are the tragedy of the aging actor Cania, who learns of his young wife's infidelity from the bitter intrigue Tonia and kills his wife and his son in revenge. The equally tragic outcome of the opera The Peasant Honor is the result of a sinful relationship between the reckless Lola and her longtime dear Turidda, for whom Turidda must pay Lolma's husband with his blood, according to an ancient custom.
