Daphne lives in a world that is foreign to her. She is the embodiment of nature and finds human behaviour and desire alien. Apollo and Leucippus, both of whom desire Daphne, attend the Dionysus Festival. Leucippus’ has a plan that comes true: Daphne abandons herself to the celebrations. Too late, Apollo, under Leucippus’ spell, realises he has acted against his divine destiny and Daphne’s nature.

»Daphne« is one of Richard Strauss’ last operas. The story is based on a tale from ancient mythology and was passed down by Ovid and Plutarch, among others. It has frequently appeared as a theme in art, music and literature. In Richard Strauss’ »Daphne«, symphonic music and lyrical passages in the style of chamber music are combined to create an impressive musical drama. Today, »Daphne« is one of the composer’s rarely performed works. This new staging is directed by Romeo Castellucci, whose works are marked by a powerful visual language in which music, light and visual arts blend.

Die Welt, in der Daphne lebt, ist ihr fremd. Als Verkörperung der Natur sind ihr menschliches Verhalten und Verlangen fern. Auf dem Dionysosfest erscheinen Apollo und Leukippos. Beide begehren Daphne. Leukippos’ Plan geht auf: Daphne verliert sich im Rausch. Zu spät erkennt der von Leukippos verfluchte Apollo, gegen seine göttliche Bestimmung und die Natur Daphnes gehandelt zu haben ...

»Daphne« zählt zu den letzten Opern von Richard Strauss. Die Handlung basiert auf einem Sagenstoff der antiken Mythologie und wurde u. a. von den Dichtern Ovid und Plutarch überliefert. Seither ist der Stoff in Kunst, Musik und Literatur präsent. Richard Strauss verknüpft in »Daphne« sinfonische Klänge und  lyrische Passagen im kammermusikalischen Gestus zu einem eindrücklichen Musikdrama. Heute zählt »Daphne« zu den selten aufgeführten Werken des Komponisten. Die Neuinszenierung der Oper übernimmt Romeo Castellucci, dessen Arbeiten von einer kraftvoll-suggestiven Bildsprache geprägt sind, in welcher Musik, Licht und Bildende Kunst miteinander verschmelzen.
