The European dream of distant worlds, which ultimately reflects one's own reality of life.


At one of her father's balls, the young Countess Lisa von Lichtenfels and her exotic visitor, the Chinese prince Sou-Chong, fall in love and she follows him to China against the will of her family. There the romantic love of both meets the harsh reality of courtly ceremonies. The pressure mounts and both have to realize that their love doesn't stand up to reality. So what remains? Always smile.

The undisputed king of the second »silver« era of Viennese operettas, Franz Lehár (who incidentally began his career as an orchestral musician in Barmen and Elberfeld!) combines two essential features of the fin-de-siècle in ›Land of Smiles‹: melodramatic and exotic. The production impresses, among other things, with the opulent costumes, which were made in China true to the original.

Auf einem Ball ihres Vaters verlieben sich die junge Gräfin Lisa von Lichtenfels und ihr exotischer Besucher, der chinesische Prinz Sou-Chong, ineinander und sie folgt ihm gegen den Willen ihrer Familie nach China. Dort trifft dann beider romantische Liebe auf die harte Realität höfischen Zeremoniells. Der Druck wächst, und beide müssen einsehen, dass ihre Liebe der Realität nicht standhält. Was also bleibt? Immer nur lächeln.

Der unbestrittene König der zweiten »silbernen« Wiener Operettenära Franz Lehár (der übrigens seine Laufbahn als Orchestermusiker in Barmen und Elberfeld begann!) vereint in ›Land des Lächelns‹ zwei wesentlich Züge des Fin-de-siècle: Melodramatik und Exotik. Die Produktion besticht unter anderem durch die opulenten Kostüme, die in China originalgetreu angefertigt wurden.
