Franz Lehár's “The Land of Smiles” is one of the most popular operettas and at the same time one of the most demanding.

The swarmed Lisa falls under the magical spell of a Chinese prince and befriends his sister Mi. Lisa follows her lover, who has been called back to China, but has to experience there that the rigid traditions of the country set insurmountable barriers to her free happiness. Prince Sou-Chong vacillates between the poles of emotions "Always smile" and "Yours is my whole heart". The alienation of the lovers takes on threatening forms, the desperate Lisa wants to go back to her home country. But the plan failed. Lisa and her former applicant, Count Gustav von Pottenstein, who was transferred from Vienna to the foreign country as a military attaché, are picked up by guards and are now standing in front of Sou-Chong. However, he has now realized that he can no longer hold Lisa.

With this illusion-free view of the incompatibility of two opposing cultures, Franz Lehár refused the operetta its obligatory happy ending, but compensated his audience for it with immortal hits like “Your is my whole heart” or “Always smile”.
