Der Freischütz is Carl Maria von Weber’s most famous work. Besides romantic arias, magnificent songs and choruses, this opera includes gripping atmospheric music. It unites the tenderness and cruelty of nature with the stirrings of the human soul. And Weber’s expression of the dark powers in the Wolfschlucht scene sets the tone for a soundscape that filled even the greatest composers after him with envy.
                                                                                                             
                                                                                              KIRILL SEREBRENNIKOV’S DEBUT
With Der Freischütz, successful Russian theatre, opera and film director Kirill Serebrennikov makes his house debut. In his approach to the opera, the struggle for success has a prominent role—in both the world of hunters and that of artists.

German tenor Benjamin Bruns and South African soprano Johanni van Oostrum promise to deliver musically and scenically top-notch interpretations of Max and Agathe, the opera’s young amorous couple. The mesmerizing soprano Ying Fang (Susanna in last season’s Le nozze di Figaro) returns to DNO as the endearing Ännchen. In the pit, conductor Riccardo Minasi leads The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Minasi’s refreshing interpretation promises to bring out the best of the opera’s colourful score.
