Good and evil meet in Weber's romantic gothic opera Der Freischütz . The young hunter Max can only win the hand of his beloved Agathe by winning the test shooting. In order to achieve this goal, he puts everything on one card and gets involved in a dangerous game with the hunter Kaspar, who is in league with the devil. He persuades him to cast free bullets, "of which six hit without fail, and the seventh belongs to the devil." Blinded by the prospect of an easy victory, Max throws all warnings to the wind, even letting Agathe, who is very concerned, ignore her is not deterred by her lover, and at night she sets off with Kaspar to the Wolfsschlucht ...

Independent of later stylizations to the musical “national shrine”, Weber leads with the Freischütz , which premiered in Berlin in 1821introduce a new tone to the music. Friedrich Kind's libretto, which originated in the spirit of literary gothic romance, was particularly suited to Weber's intentions in the composition, in that he was able to give each individual scene its unmistakable coloring, whereby "the images of the uncanny are by far the predominant." (Weber) The Erfurt new production on the cathedral steps was the version with recitatives - instead of the spoken dialogue of the original - which Hector Berlioz composed later for the Paris performances of the opera. The production by Guy Montavon with the set design by Peter Sykora was created in co-production with the Opéra de Nice (France).
