Mozart's little operatic masterpiece
On February 7, 1786, a celebration was held in Vienna, organized by Kaiser Joseph II in honor of the Governor General of the Netherlands. In the program of celebrations, in addition to dinner parties and dances, there was a musical competition: the audience had to choose which is better - Italian or German opera. To do this, two composers - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri - were ordered one-act works on a comic plot from the life of the theatrical backstage.

Salieri represented the Italian school at this competition and composed the opera First Music, Then Words. And Mozart, in the German tradition, wrote the singspiel "Director of the Theatre". In it, the composer and librettist laughed at the capricious and absurd morals so often found in the theatrical world, at the narcissistic prima donnas and the desire of every artist to be the main favorite of the public.

The opera has only four musical numbers and an overture, which are interspersed with cheerful conversational dialogues. But the genius of Mozart managed to turn even this custom-made miniature into a small operatic masterpiece.

Маленький оперный шедевр Моцарта
7 февраля 1786 года в Вене состоялся праздник, организованный кайзером Йозефом II в честь генерал-губернатора Нидерландов. В программе торжеств, помимо званых обедов и танцев, было музыкальное состязание: зрителям предстояло выбрать, что же лучше — итальянская опера или немецкая. Для этого двум композиторам — Вольфгангу Амадею Моцарту и Антонио Сальери, — были заказаны одноактные произведения на комический сюжет из жизни театрального закулисья.

Сальери представлял на этом конкурсе итальянскую школу и сочинил оперу «Сначала музыка, потом слова». А Моцарт в немецких традициях написал зингшпиль «Директор театра». В нем композитор и либреттист посмеялись над капризными и вздорными нравами, так часто встречающимися в театральном мире, над самовлюбленными примадоннами и желанием каждого артиста быть главным любимцем публики.

В опере всего четыре музыкальных номера и увертюра, которые перемежаются веселыми разговорными диалогами. Но даже эту заказную миниатюру гений Моцарта сумел превратить в маленький оперный шедевр.
