A roast venison is supposed to crown the engagement of the elderly village schoolteacher Baculus and his young, clever peasant ward Gretchen. But the necessary poaching trip to the Count's park almost costs Baculus a position and a bride. Gretchen's offer to see the Count himself doesn't seem opportune given his notorious sexual greed. A student who is willing to go to the Count as an alleged bride promises salvation. Behind this is none other than the Count's widowed sister - which is only the beginning of hopelessly funny confusion. Under the cloak of disguise comedy, Albert Lortzing wrote a biting and poignant social satire in »Wildschütz« from 1842, the climax of which was reached when Baculus agreed to sell his Gretchen for 5
