Soft waltz sounds and fiery csárdás music on the one hand, glorification of war and racism on the other. “Der Zigeunerbaron” (The Gypsy Baron) has a difficult time as a play in today's theater world, which is painfully wrong, especially with regard to the composition.
Director Peter Lund leaves the multifaceted story in the time of Empress Maria Theresa and tells a fairytale story of courage, freedom and esprit of the so-called "gypsies" in the context of the Austrian morals commission, which does not lack contemporary humor and savvy character drawings. The musical direction is in the hands of Strauss-experienced Alfred Eschwé. Lucian Krasznec returns to the Volksoper as Sándor Bárinkay and KS Kurt Rydl makes his late operetta debut as Kálmán Zsupán.
A marshy landscape somewhere in the Habsburg-administered Banat around the year 1740. The multi-ethnic state unites large farmers and bohemians here: in the manor the pig farmer Zsupán, next to them a group of gypsies under the matriarchy of old Czipra. When Sándor Bárinkay, who grew up abroad, returns to the homeland of his ancestors, he demands the goods to which he is entitled, but at the same time declares himself a willing marriage candidate: a welcome son-in-law for Zsupán. But a rascal trumps the even bigger one and no agreement can be reached. The beautiful and self-confident Saffi turns the tide, Bárinkay is declared baron of the gypsies and love makes everything good. Were it not for the "long arm of the monarchy",
