The action takes place in the first half of the 18th century, on the once flourishing domains of the exiled Barinkay. The once towering castle is now a ruin; instead, the neighbor Zsupan (pig farmer) thrives off the spoils of Barinkay's property.

The royal amnesty, but especially the "restitutio in integrum" edict, bring to the fore the young Sandor Barinkay (the exiled's son) who, together with Commissioner Carnero , will take steps to restore possession. Carnero is surprised, obviously unpleasantly, to find his wife, Mirabella (disappeared during the war), serving Zsupan , and his son, Ottokar , virtual son-in-law of the merchant upstart (as a suitor for the hand of the prudish Arsena , his daughter). .

Received generally sympathetically, the news of the return of the sole survivor of the Barinkay family will panic Zsupan , aware that he must answer for the robbery. The instinct of preservation incites him to the compromise solution, proposing Barinkay to marry his daughter.

However, Arsena 's upstart antics disgust Barinkay , instead he is fascinated by the beauty of the gypsy Saffi (daughter of the fortune teller Czipra ) whom he meets at night in the dilapidated castle. The gypsies return from the fair; seeing the master's son, they proclaim and hail him as their voivode.

Barinkay , spending the night among the ruins, learns from the old fortune teller the secret of a dream, according to which, on the day of the wedding, he will find a hidden treasure near the castle wall. Day breaks and the gypsies go to work.

The group of boyars (instigated by Carnero , Mirabella and Zsupan ) accuse Barinkay of immorality, by living with a gypsy girl. Their anger increases when they learn that Barinkay has found the treasure they have been searching for in vain.

War breaks out. Count Homonay , at the head of the hussars, comes to recruit soldiers. Carnero accuses Barinkay of breaking all etiquette by marrying a gypsy girl. Czipra publishes a document attesting that Saffi is of noble birth, causing general consternation. Barinkay , disgusted, enlists and goes to war.

The people welcome the fighters back victorious. "The last (in battle) will be the first (to return)". Thus, the first to arrive is Zsupan , loaded with loot, because even in war conditions, some people know how to take advantage. The real heroes, however, are Barinkay , Ottokar and the other fighters.

Barinkay refuses the honors offered by the empress, staying near his lover and among the gypsies who elected him voivode.

Acțiunea se petrece în prima jumătate a secolului al XVIII-lea, pe domeniile cândva înfloritoare ale exilatului Barinkay. Castelul, odinioară falnic, este acum o ruină; în schimb, vecinul Zsupan (crescător de porci) prosperă pe seama spolierii proprietății lui Barinkay.

Amnistia împărătească, dar mai ales edictul „restitutio in integrum“, îl aduc în prim-plan pe tânărul Sandor Barinkay (fiul celui exilat) care, împreună cu comisarul Carnero, vor face demersurile repunerii în posesie. Carnero este surprins, evident neplăcut, să-și găsească soția, Mirabella (dispărută în timpul războiului), slugărindu-l pe Zsupan, iar pe fiul său, Ottokar, virtual ginere al parvenitului negustor (ca pretendent la mâna năstrușnicei Arsena, fiica acestuia).

Primită, în general cu simpatie, vestea reîntoarcerii unicului supraviețuitor al familiei Barinkay îl va panica pe Zsupan, conștient că trebuie să dea socoteală pentru jaf. Instinctul de conservare îl incită la soluția compromisului, propunându-i lui Barinkay să se însoare cu fiica sa.

Ifosele de parvenită ale Arsenei îl dezgustă însă pe Barinkay, în schimb este fascinat de frumusețea țigăncii Saffi (fiica ghicitoarei Czipra) pe care o întâlnește noaptea în castelul părăginit. Se întorc țiganii de la târg; văzându-l pe fiul stăpânului, îl proclamă și aclamă ca voievod al lor.

Barinkay, petrecându-si noaptea între ruine, află de la bătrâna ghicitoare taina unui vis, potrivit căruia, în ziua nunții, va găsi o comoară ascunsă lânga zidul castelului. Se face ziuă și țiganii pornesc la muncă.

Grupul de boieri (instigați de Carnero, Mirabella și Zsupan) îl acuză pe Barinkay de imoralitate, prin faptul că trăiește cu o fată de țigan. Furia lor se amplifică atunci când află că Barinkay a găsit comoara căutată de ei zadarnic.

Izbucnește războiul. Contele Homonay, în fruntea husarilor, vine să recruteze ostași. Carnero îl reclamă pe Barinkay că, încălcând orice etichetă, s-a însurat cu o fată de țigan. Czipra dă publicității un document care atestă că Saffi este de origine nobilă, provocând stupoare generală. Barinkay, contrariat, se înrolează și pleacă la război.

Poporul întâmpină luptătorii întorși victorioși. „Cei de pe urmă (în luptă) vor fi cei dintâi (la înapoiere)“. Astfel, primul sosit este Zsupan, încărcat de pradă, căci, și în condiții de război, unii știu să profite. Adevărații eroi sunt însă Barinkay, Ottokar și ceilalți luptători.

Barinkay refuză onorurile oferite de împărăteasă, rămânând lângă iubita sa și între țiganii care l-au ales voievod.
