Das Fallbeil ist genau notiert. Jedes Mal, wenn es niedersaust und eine jener Karmeliterinnen köpft, reagiert die Musik mit einem Aufschwung und steigert sich zur hymnischen Verklärung. So zeichnet Francis Poulenc in seiner 1957 an der Mailänder Scala uraufgeführten Oper das tragische Ende von 17 Ordensschwestern, die sich der Säkularisierung durch die Französische Revolution nicht beugen wollen und den Märtyrertod auf sich nehmen. Unter den Nonnen ist Blanche, die, seit frühster Kindheit unter Panikattacken leidend, aus der eingeschworenen Gemeinschaft ausbrechen will. Doch angesichts der Standhaftigkeit ihrer Mitschwestern löst sie sich schlussendlich doch aus der sensationslüstern gaffenden Zuschauermenge und besteigt als letzte das Schafott.
Poulenc ist als Clown und Mönch in einer Person beschrieben worden. Die Leichtigkeit der melodischen Erfi ndung und freche Eleganz seiner Musik wurden nach 1936, dem Jahr, in dem er sich zum Katholizismus bekannte, mit religiösem Sendungsbewusstsein kontrastiert. Poulenc skizziert «im Zeitalter der Angst» mit den «Dialogues des Carmélites» Dialoge am Abgrund – dem eigenen wie dem der Zeitgeschichte.
Cornelius Meister, Generalmusikdirektor am Theater Heidelberg, der in der vorletzten Spielzeit bei Arthur Honeggers «Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher» am Pult stand, dirigiert. Der Nachwuchsregisseur Benedikt von Peter, frisch ausgezeichnet mit dem «Götz-Friedrich-Preis für Regie», inszeniert.

The guillotine is noted exactly. Every time it swoops down and beheads one of those Carmelite nuns, the music reacts with an upswing and builds to a hymn-like transfiguration. In his opera, which premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1957, Francis Poulenc portrays the tragic end of 17 nuns who refuse to bow to the secularization of the French Revolution and accept martyrdom. Among the nuns is Blanche, who, having suffered from panic attacks since early childhood, wants to break out of the tight-knit community. But in view of the steadfastness of her fellow sisters, she finally breaks away from the sensation-hungry crowd of spectators and is the last to climb the scaffold.
Poulenc has been described as a clown and monk in one person. The lightness of melodic invention and bold elegance of his music were contrasted with a religious sense of mission after 1936, the year he professed Catholicism. Poulenc sketches "in the age of fear" with the "Dialogues des Carmélites" dialogues on the abyss - his own as well as that of contemporary history.
