Operetta "The Merry Widow" tragicomedy. And although the operetta genre has always been considered light and carefree, the composer Franz Lehar put a meaning into it, which makes the viewer empathize with all the characters.

 

In 1961, the playwright Henri Meilhac presented the world with the comedy The Embassy Attaché, which made its debut at the vaudeville theater in Paris. At the same time, the leadership of the Theater an der Wien in Vienna came up with the idea of ​​staging an opera based on the plot of a French author. The writing of the music was entrusted to Richard Heuberger. Only a year later, the honored teacher, conductor and composer Heuberger brought the 1st act. After listening to it, it immediately became clear to everyone that there would be no sensational, new operetta in his authorship. The contract was terminated and the creation of music was entrusted to Lehar.

 

As soon as the composer finished his work in the summer of 1905, the director of the theater rejected the composer's music, and only thanks to Victor Leon, who was able to convince the management, and the actors of the theater, Lehar's music remained in this work and still pleases with its originality and bright colors.

 

The name of the operetta arose by chance. Many contemporaries were tormented by the question “Why is a cheerful widow, because Hanna (the main character) had completely different character traits?”. In those days, the widows of officials of a number of departments enjoyed a privilege in the form of free tickets to performances. With someone's light hand, these ladies began to be called burdensome, painful widows. Hearing this nickname, Legar said: "And we will have a merry widow!" In German, these two words differ only by one letter.
