Der drohende Staatsbankrott Pontevedros muss verhindert werden! Die einzige Hoffnung des kleinen Landes ist die millionenschwere Witwe Hanna Glawari, die gerade in Paris weilt. Damit die Millionen «im Land» bleiben, setzt Botschafter Baron Zeta den Grafen Danilo, Hannas ehemalige Jugendliebe, auf den heiss begehrten Männerschwarm an.

Doch Danilo erweist sich als schlechter Mitgiftjäger, denn das Vaterland und das Erbe Hannas lassen ihn kalt. Erst als der junge französische Charmeur Camille de Rosillon als potenzieller Nebenbuhler auftaucht, erwachen die lange unterdrückten Gefühle Danilos für Hanna.

Die 1905 uraufgeführte Operette «Die lustige Witwe» ist bis heute eines der populärsten Werke des Genres und begründete Franz Lehárs Weltruhm. Die genialen musikalischen Einfälle wuchsen zu unvergesslichen Melodien, wie «Da geh’ ich zu Maxim», «Lippen schweigen» und «Ja, das Studium der Weiber ist schwer». Zudem streute Lehár treffsicher alle verfügbaren Tanzarten wie Galopp, Walzer, Polka, aber auch Polonaise, Kolo und Cakewalk in die raffinierte Partitur und schuf damit die neue Spezies der Tanzoperette.

The impending national bankruptcy of Pontevedro must be prevented! The only hope of the small country is the millionaire widow Hanna Glawari, who is staying in Paris at the moment. So that the millions stay "in the country", Ambassador Baron Zeta puts Count Danilo, Hanna's former childhood sweetheart, on the coveted heartthrob.

But Danilo turns out to be a poor dowry hunter, because the fatherland and Hanna's legacy leave him cold. Only when the young French charmer Camille de Rosillon appears as a potential rival do Danilo's long-suppressed feelings for Hanna awaken.

The operetta "The Merry Widow", premiered in 1905, is still one of the most popular works of the genre and established Franz Lehár's world fame. The ingenious musical ideas grew into unforgettable melodies such as "I'll go to Maxim's", "Lips be silent" and "Yes, studying women is difficult". In addition, Lehár accurately sprinkled all available dance styles such as gallop, waltz, polka, but also polonaise, colo and cakewalk into the refined score and thus created the new species of dance operetta.
