The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe)Operetta in three acts by Franz Lehár with libretto Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, from the comedy L'Attaché d'ambassade by Henri Meilhac, is one of the most popular and long-lived operettas. The action begins in the embassy of the imaginary principality of Pontevedro in Paris, where Baron Zeta, the ambassador, and his wife Valencienne have organized a magnificent reception. Among the guests is the seducer Camille de Rossillon, who shamelessly woos Valencienne under the eyes of her husband, too busy to notice. Everyone awaits the arrival of the rich widow Hanna Glawari, whose fortune makes up almost all of Pontevedro's bank deposits. To preserve this heritage at home, Zeta has decided to remarry the widow with a Pontevedrino: the chosen candidate is Count Danilo, a worldly and irresistible man. Danilo and Hanna had been lovers many years ago and although Danilo still loves Hanna, pride prevents him from declaring himself: now that she has become so rich it may seem like an engagement of interest. The next day Hanna throws a party in her garden: the first part is dedicated to the Pontevedrine traditions, the second to the pleasures of Paris. Amidst the confusion, Valencienne hides with the charming diplomat Camille in a pavilion; by chance Count Zeta peeks out the door and seems to recognize his cheating wife. At the last moment Hanna succeeds in replacing Valencienne, saving appearances and arousing the jealousy of Danilo, who up to then proved cold. In the second part of the party, the garden takes on the appearance of the Parisian Maxim's. Hanna reveals the prank of the pavilion to Danilo and the two embrace in a waltz. Meanwhile, Zeta has discovered that he has actually been betrayed, but forgives his wife, and the work ends in general jubilation.
