The Queen of the Night aria has departed the Solar System a long time ago and is travelling further in space alongside a few other musical gems in search for intelligent life. Those charged with selecting the tracks for the Voyager Golden Record faced a huge responsibility: if, indeed, there is an alien civilisation somewhere in the Universe that could potentially be hostile to the human race, it was best to introduce ourselves with ‘music [that] hath charms to soothe a savage breast’. And there is not a living soul on Earth who would not agree that these few minutes of coloratura fireworks are worth saving the human kind for. In the internationally popular Komische Oper’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute which we have been lucky enough to have in Warsaw for a few seasons now, the aria is performed by a giant lady spider dancing over a wriggling Tamino. The staging is the work of Barrie Kosky and the ‘1927’ duo made of performance art, theatre and film wizards who first conquered the Edinburgh Fringe and then ‘brought down the system’ at a few respected opera houses around the world. This dazzlingly hallucinatory show featuring actors playing in a live animation is a tribute to silent film. The director calls it ‘a silent movie by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’ inspired – one might add – by 18th-century chalcography, Yellow Submarine, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and superhero comics, to name just a few obvious references. It is an amazing show, an operatic joyride.

In The Magic Flutein Barrie Kosky's staging, everything is like a fairy tale, and each idea shows the director's gigantic sense of humor, who must have had a great time listening to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's music. When the red curtain opens, the viewer sees only a white screen, on which the frolics are about to begin - the director will playfully juggle, to the rhythm of Mozart's music, elements of silent cinema, slapstick comedy and cartoon. The co-authors of this performance - Suzanne Andrade and Paul Barritt from the group "1927" - combined film animation with live set theater. The effect is dazzling. Here is Papageno, this coarse simpleton, here depicted as a sad clown in the Buster Keaton type, getting drunk with pink elephants honking cocktails from narrow glasses. Perhaps Barrie Kosky owes his feisty imagination to his origin - he calls himself an "Eastern European cocktail" because of his Jewish, Belarusian, Russian, Polish and Hungarian roots. He also readily admits to his youthful fascination with the theater of Jerzy Grotowski and Tadeusz Kantor, about which he found out while studying at the University of Melbourne in the 1980s.

Watching his The Magic Flute , the viewer may get the impression that he is going back to the beginnings of the history of cinema, when places where short films fit only on one reel were shown were called movie theater with the aim of providing viewers with simple entertainment. It is at this level that the staging idea of ​​Barrie Kosky, with all its sophistication, begins to rhyme with the character of Mozart's Magic Flute - today perceived as a masterpiece of elite culture, and written in the form of a cheerful singspiel for the folk Theater auf der Wieden in the suburbs Vienna, where audiences of unsophisticated taste went.

Mozart wrote The Magic Flute at the request of the director of this theater, and also his friend Emanuel Schikaneder, with whom he had collaborated before, but he did not expect such a great success. On September 30, 1791, he conducted the premiere of The Magic Harpsichord Flute . The piece was enthusiastically received, it was played throughout October 1791, and some fragments were encored, as the composer joyfully reported in his letters to his wife, Konstancja. Within a year, The Magic Flute exceeded a hundred performances in Vienna alone, and then it traveled all over Europe, also hitting the National Theater in Warsaw, two years after the Viennese premiere.

“At first glance, the action of Singspiel seems quite chaotic. We have to accept that it is governed by a different kind of logic, having nothing to do with the world of adults and its rationality, because we are in the land of fairy tales, "writes Guy Wagner, author of the book Brother Mozart on Masonic threads in the music of Wolfgang Amadeus.

Over the years, people have asked what the libretto by Schikaneder is about this eruption of pure nonsense. As confusing as it may seem, its great advantage was openness to various interpretations.

In the view of Barrie Kosky, it is an extremely logical, and at the same time saturated with fantasy story about the fear of loneliness and the fact that no one should be alone. The Warsaw performance is a transfer of the well-known and shown in many countries staging from the Komische Oper in Berlin (premiere in 2012) - Kosky is the general and artistic director of this theater.

W Czarodziejskim flecie w inscenizacji Barrie Kosky’ego wszystko jest jak z bajki, a każdy pomysł świadczy o gigantycznym poczuciu humoru reżysera, który musiał świetnie się bawić przy muzyce Wolfganga Amadeusza Mozarta. Gdy rozsuwa się czerwona kurtyna, widz dostrzega tylko biały ekran, na którym zaraz rozpoczynają się harce – reżyser z fantazją będzie żonglował, w rytm muzyki Mozarta, elementami kina niemego, slapstickowej komedii i kreskówki. Współtwórcy tego przedstawienia – Suzanne Andrade i Paul Barritt z zespołu „1927” – połączyli filmową animację z teatrem żywego planu. Efekt jest olśniewający. Oto Papageno, ten rubaszny prostaczek, tutaj przedstawiony jako smutny klown w typie Bustera Keatona, upija się w towarzystwie różowych słoni trąbiących koktajle z wąskich kieliszków. Królowa Nocy jest wielkim pająkiem, Monostatos pojawia się jako blady wampir w kostiumie hrabiego Drakuli, a Pamina nosi czarną perukę z grzywką, co upodobnia ją do aktorki i tancerki Louise Brooks, gwiazdy kina niemego.

Być może swoją feeryczną wyobraźnię Barrie Kosky zawdzięcza pochodzeniu – samego siebie nazywa „koktajlem wschodnioeuropejskim” ze względu na żydowskie, białoruskie, rosyjskie, polskie i węgierskie korzenie. Chętnie też przyznaje się do młodzieńczej fascynacji teatrem Jerzego Grotowskiego i Tadeusza Kantora, o których dowiedział się, studiując w latach 80. XX wieku na Uniwersytecie w Melbourne.

Oglądając jego Czarodziejski flet, widz może odnieść wrażenie, że oto cofa się do początków historii kina, kiedy miejsca, w których wyświetlano krótkie filmy mieszczące się tylko na jednej rolce nazywano z amerykańska kinoteatrami (movie theater), a celem było dostarczenie widzom prostej rozrywki. Właśnie na tej płaszczyźnie inscenizatorski pomysł Barrie Kosky’ego, przy całym swoim wyrafinowaniu, zaczyna się rymować z charakterem Czarodziejskiego fletu Mozarta – dziś postrzeganego jako arcydzieło kultury elitarnej, a napisanego przecież w formie wesołej śpiewogry (singspiel) dla ludowego Theater auf der Wieden na przedmieściach Wiednia, dokąd chadzała publiczność o niewyszukanym guście.

Mozart napisał Czarodziejski flet na zamówienie dyrektora tego teatru, zarazem swojego przyjaciela Emanuela Schikanedera, z którym współpracował już wcześniej, nie spodziewał się jednak aż tak wielkiego sukcesu. 30 września 1791 roku dyrygował premierą Czarodziejskiego fletu od klawesynu. Utwór został przyjęty entuzjastycznie, grano go przez cały październik roku 1791, a niektóre fragmenty bisowano, o czym z radością donosił kompozytor w listach do żony Konstancji. Nim minął rok, Czarodziejski flet przekroczył sto przedstawień w samym Wiedniu, a potem rozjeździł się po całej Europie, trafiając również do Teatru Narodowego w Warszawie, w dwa lata po wiedeńskiej premierze.

„Na pierwszy rzut oka akcja singspielu wydaje się dość chaotyczna. Musimy przyjąć, iż rządzi się ona innego rodzaju logiką, nie mającą nic wspólnego ze światem ludzi dorosłych i jego racjonalnością, Jesteśmy bowiem w krainie baśni” – pisze Guy Wagner, autor książki Brat Mozart o wątkach masońskich w muzyce Wolfganga Amadeusza.

Przez lata zadawano sobie pytanie, o co chodzi w tej erupcji pure nonsensu, jakim jest libretto Schikanedera. Jakkolwiek zagmatwane by się wydawało, jego wielką zaletą okazała się otwartość na przeróżne interpretacje.

W ujęciu Barrie Kosky’ego jest to niezwykle logiczna, a przy tym przesiąknięta fantazją opowieść o lęku przed samotnością i o tym, że nikt nie powinien być sam. Warszawski spektakl to przeniesienie słynnej już i pokazywanej w wielu krajach inscenizacji z Komische Oper w Berlinie (premiera w 2012 roku) – Kosky jest dyrektorem naczelnym i artystycznym tego teatru.
