King Philip II and the Church, in the person of the old Grand Inquisitor, are fighting for power in Spain in 1560. The French Princess Elisabeth of Valois and the Spanish heir to the throne Don Carlo have a passionate love for one another, but the princess must marry Carlo's father Philip in order to bring peace to her own people. The infantry and the king are increasingly in conflict: the freedom fighter Marquis de Posa uses Don Carlo for his purposes (and thus against his father's political interests), Princess Eboli betrays his love for Elisabeth, and the Grand Inquisitor also threatens Philipp under pressure... Will love, friendship and family ties withstand the deadly machinery of power?

In one of his most fascinating operas, Verdi describes the characters, their feelings and the resulting situations in dark orchestral colors - from Philip's poignant lamentation for loneliness ("Ella giammai m'amó/She never loved me") to those aimed at great effect Choral scenes in the French tradition of Grand Opéra.

Without exception, the main roles in Don Carlo belong to the favorite repertoire of the greatest singers - with Elisabeth (soprano), Princess Eboli (mezzo-soprano), Don Carlo (tenor), Philipp and Grand Inquisitor (bass) there are prime roles for almost every voice.

Verdi had to shorten the five-act (and thus almost five-hour) work at the premiere in Paris in 1867 - otherwise the audience would not have gotten their last train. The Italian version from 1884 can be heard in the Knights' Hall in Heidenheim – four acts of opulent opera music.

Die französische Prinzessin Elisabeth von Valois und der spanische Thronfolger Don Carlo lieben einander flammend, doch die Prinzessin muss Carlos Vater Philipp heiraten, um ihrem eigenen Volk Frieden zu bringen. Der Infant und der König geraten immer mehr in Konflikt: Der Freiheitskämpfer Marquis de Posa spannt Don Carlo für seine Zwecke (und damit gegen die politischen Interessen des Vaters) ein, Prinzessin Eboli verrät seine Liebe zu Elisabeth, und der Großinquisitor setzt Philipp zusätzlich mit Drohungen unter Druck… Halten Liebe, Freundschaft und familiäre Bande dem todbringenden Räderwerk der Macht stand?

Verdi schildert in einer seiner faszinierendsten Opern in dunklen Orchesterfarben die Charaktere, ihre Gefühle und die daraus entstehenden Situationen – von der ergreifenden Einsamkeits-Klage Philipps („Ella giammai m´amó/Sie hat mich nie geliebt“) bis zu den auf große Wirkung zielenden Chorszenen in der französischen Tradition der Grand Opéra.

Die Hauptrollen in Don Carlo gehören ausnahmslos zum Lieblingsrepertoire der größten Sänger*innen – mit Elisabeth (Sopran), Prinzessin Eboli (Mezzosopran), Don Carlo (Tenor), Philipp und Großinquisitor (Bass) sind Paraderollen für fast jedes Stimmfach dabei.

Verdi musste das fünfaktige (und damit fast fünfstündige) Werk bei der Uraufführung 1867 in Paris kürzen – die Besucher hätten sonst ihren letzten Zug nicht mehr bekommen. Im Rittersaal zu Heidenheim erklingt die italienische Fassung von 1884 – vier Akte prallvoller Opernmusik.
