Verdi has long considered creating an opera based on Schiller's drama "Don Carlos". Contributed to his visit to Spain in 1863 on the occasion of the production of the opera "The Power of Fate". Then he goes to Escorial Castle, which makes a very depressing impression on him.

The libretto of "Don Carlos" was written by Joseph Mary (1798-1866) and Camille du Locle (1832-1903). The general spirit of the drama is preserved. At Verdi's request, a picture was added at the beginning to clarify Mary and du Locle wrote the libretto in the spirit of the French Grand Opera - in five acts, with traditional ballet and all the other details approved by the then "director of musical fashion" in France, Giacomo Meyerber.

Verdi eagerly began writing "Don Carlos." The struggle of the Italian people for liberation, as well as the fierce struggles between secular and ecclesiastical authorities in his homeland, which hinder the unification of Italy, recall the events recreated in Schiller's drama. the composer notes: "This opera is born amid fire and fires."

"Don Carlos" was exported for the first time on March 11, 1867 at the Paris Grand Opera with great success. The following year it was performed in Germany in a remake of MR Beer. At that time Zanardini made a new edition of Carlos ", intended for Italy. In 1883, Verdi reworked Don Carlos, shortening it considerably. As such, the opera was performed in Milan on January 10, 1884. It is still performed in Italy.
