Spain, mid-16th century. A surveillance state rules with the atrocities of the Inquisition. The royal family becomes the scene of political intrigues and private entanglements over the heir to the throne Carlos. He lays claim to his stepmother Queen Elisabeth and thus comes into conflict with his father, King Philip II. Giuseppe Verdi's opera based on Schiller's original of the same name is a gripping political drama and a precise family portrait. Director Vincent Huguet is staging this work together with the stage set legend Richard Peduzzi. The musical direction is the young conductor Michele Spotti.
