The premiere of the opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Don Giovanni was held on the 29th of October 1787 in Prague. The opera immediately gained incredible popularity and over the next few years was performed in Vienna, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Passau, Bonn, Warsaw, Hamburg, Brno, Berlin, Augsburg, Hannover…

The libretto of the opera, based on the medieval tale of the dissolute Seville aristocrat Don Juan Tenorio was written by Lorenzo da Ponte, the author of the three, including Don Giovanni, most famous operas by Mozart. According to the legend, Don Juan was executed by monks. Those monks also spread the rumour that he had been thrown into hell by the statue of Commendatore, the father of one of the women who he had seduced. Based on this impressive story, as is known, multiple literary and musical works have been created.

However, it was Don Giovanni by Mozart that became its most outstanding realisation. The genre of this opera, which united comedy and tragedy, love affairs and murder, hedonism and mysticism, was unusual: “all the splendour of life and the abyss under it” (Georgy Chicherin). Not by chance there are two finales in Don Giovanni. The first is tragic: the death of Don Giovanni, who falls into the flaming hellish abyss. The second is didactic and even cheerful with all the other characters condemning the villain and discussing plans for the future.

The motives of the actions of the main characters, Don Giovanni and Donna Anna, are also ambiguous. Some of them raise questions. We will never know if there has been anything between them or not before their first appearance on stage. Reasons for suspicion exist: Donna Anna has postponed her marriage to Don Ottavio with soft insistence several times… And once again: why the famous lover, despite all his charm, throughout the entire duration of the action fails to seduce a single woman? Why, in the last minutes of his life, at the sight of the ghost of the Commendatore, who he had killed, he never comes to repentance? Everyone who thinks about this story must answer these questions for themselves.

The genius of Mozart’s music and the polysemy of the plot rendered his Don Giovanni into some kind of a “magical crystal”, through which future generations could see themselves. While most of the operas of the era of classicism had been forgotten, Don Giovanni resonated in the art of romantics: in the novella of the same name by E.T.A. Hoffmann, in the little tragedy (The Stone Guest) by Pushkin and the opera, based on it, by Dargomyzhsky, and in the mystical short story by Mérimée Les Ames Du Purgatoire. It also appears in the most popular Don Giovanni’s Serenade by Tchaikovsky, written literally to the tune of the serenade by Don Giovanni from the second act of Mozart’s opera …

On the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre, Don Giovanni appeared in 1825 (three years later it was also staged in St Petersburg). Since then, it has been returning to the Bolshoi more often than any other opera from the heritage of Mozart.

The performance, which is currently being held on the New Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre, was realised by the staging team of Tugan Sokhiev (conductor), Semyon Spivak (director), choreographer Sergei Gritsay, set designer Semyon Pastukh and costume designer Galina Solovyova.

In this production, the characters of the legendary story belong to the society in which an endless celebration reigns. Hedonism and an uncontrollable thirst for pleasure dominate. According to the director, his performance is not about a seducer but a person who lives playing and while loving life, he wants to get everything out of it. In this desire he simply cannot stop at the right time. In the relationship between the characters there is no conscious cruelty, on the contrary, it is more innocence and a kind of naive defencelessness that are showing through. They live their entire lifetime, coming to the finale in old age. This transformation of Don Giovanni into an old man seems to awaken a child within him. All this contributes to the embodiment of the famous opera in the spirit of the theatre of experience, with the naturalness of emotions and reactions, so unusual for our time of radical directorial experiments.

Премьера оперы Вольфганга Амадея Моцарта «Дон Жуан» состоялась 29 октября 1787 года в Праге. Опера сразу приобрела невероятную популярность и за несколько последовавших лет была исполнена в Вене, Лейпциге, Франкфурте, Мангейме, Пассау, Бонне, Варшаве, Гамбурге, Брно, Берлине, Аугсбурге, Ганновере…

Либретто оперы по мотивам средневековой легенды о распутном севильском аристократе Доне Хуане Тенорио написал Лоренцо Да Понте, автор либретто трёх самых знаменитых, включая «Дон Жуана», опер Моцарта. Согласно легенде, Дон Хуан был казнён монахами. Те же монахи распространили слух о том, что он был низвержен в ад статуей командора, отца одной из соблазнённых им женщин. На основе этой впечатляющей истории, как известно, было создано множество литературных и музыкальных произведений.

Однако именно «Дон Жуан» Моцарта стал самым выдающимся её воплощением. Необычным был жанр этой оперы, в которой соединились комедия и трагедия, любовные похождения и убийство, гедонизм и мистика: «весь блеск жизни и под ним бездна» (Георгий Чичерин). Не случайно в «Дон Жуане» два финала. Первый – трагический: гибель Дон Жуана, который проваливается в пылающую адскую бездну. Второй – назидательный и даже жизнерадостный, в нём все остальные герои порицают негодяя и обсуждают планы на будущее.

Неоднозначны и мотивы поступков главных героев: Дон Жуана и Донны Анны. Некоторые из них вызывают вопросы. Так, мы никогда не узнаем, было или не было что-нибудь между ними до их первого появления на сцене. Причины для подозрений существуют: Донна Анна несколько раз с мягкой настойчивостью откладывает свадьбу со своим названным женихом Доном Оттавио… И опять же: почему знаменитому любовнику, несмотря на всё его обаяние, на всём протяжении действия так и не удаётся соблазнить ни одну женщину? Почему в последние минуты своей жизни, при виде призрака убитого им Командора он так и не приходит к раскаянию? Каждый, кто задумывается над этим сюжетом, должен ответить на эти вопросы сам.

Гениальность музыки Моцарта и многозначность сюжета сделали его «Дон Жуана» своего рода «магическим кристаллом», сквозь который будущие поколения видели самих себя. В то время как большинство опер эпохи классицизма было забыто, «Дон Жуан» «зазвучал» в искусстве романтиков:

в одноимённой новелле Э. Т. А. Гофмана, в маленькой трагедии («Каменный гость») Пушкина и написанной на её основе опере Даргомыжского, в мистической повести Мериме «Души чистилища». И в популярнейшей «Серенаде Дон Жуана» Чайковского, написанной буквально на мотив Серенады Дон Жуана из второго действия моцартовской оперы…

На сцене Большого театра «Дон Жуан» появился в 1825 году (спустя три года он был представлен и в Санкт-Петербурге). И с тех пор возвращался на подмостки Большого чаще, чем какая-либо другая опера из наследия Моцарта.

Спектакль, идущий в настоящее время на Новой сцене Большого театра, выпустила постановочная группа, в которую вошли Туган Сохиев (дирижёр-постановщик), Семён Спивак (режиссёр), хореограф Сергей Грицай, сценограф Семён Пастух и художник по костюмам Галина Соловьёва.

В этой постановке герои легендарной истории принадлежат к обществу, где царит бесконечный праздник. Правят бал гедонизм и безудержная жажда наслаждений. По словам режиссёра-постановщика, его спектакль повествует не о соблазнителе, а о человеке, который живёт играя и, любя жизнь, хочет получить от нее всё. И в этом своём желании жить он просто не может вовремя остановиться. В отношениях героев нет осознанной жестокости, напротив, скорее сквозят простодушие и некая наивная беззащитность. Они проживают целую жизнь, приходя к финалу уже в старости. И превращение Дон Жуана в старика как будто бы пробуждает в нём ребенка. Всё это способствует воплощению знаменитой оперы в духе театра переживания, с естественностью эмоций и реакций, необычной для нашего времени радикальных режиссёрских экспериментов.
