Don Pasquale, an old bachelor, decides to marry to thwart the plans of his nephew Ernesto. But Ernesto, with the help of Doctor Malatesta, works to catch Don Pasquale in the nets of the trap he himself has devised: it is to Norina, his betrothed, that he entrusts the role of the future marry. Docile then intractable, she excels in games of pretense. Between these two generations, the conflict simmers and stirs up the comedy as much as it underlines the nostalgia of human beings. Damiano Michieletto paves the way here for sincerity and dramatic depth at the heart of a seemingly light work, known to be the apotheosis of the buffa genre. Don Pasquale, an old fogey, believes he is playing a clever trick on his nephew Ernesto by telling him that he is going to marry a young girl – and thus will deprive him of any inheritance. But the charming Norina and Dr. Malatesta will beat him at his own game. Disguises, false marriages and trickery follow one another in Gaetano Donizetti’s opera inspired by the characters of the commedia dell’arte. With this whirlwind score, successfully premiered in Paris in 1843, the author of Lucia di Lammermoor shows a genuine talent for comedy and refreshes “opera buffa”. While director Damiano Michieletto delights in playing with eras, he preserves the work’s levity and brings out its bittersweet tenderness. Such is one of the trademarks of Donizetti, ever full of empathy for his characters, even when they are old fogeys.

Un vieux barbon, Don Pasquale, pense jouer un bon tour à son neveu Ernesto en lui annonçant qu’il va se marier avec une jeune fille – ce qui le privera de tout héritage. C’est sans compter sur la charmante Norina et le docteur Malatesta qui vont le prendre à son propre piège. Déguisements, faux mariage et jeu de dupes s’enchaînent dans cet opéra de Gaetano Donizetti inspiré par les personnages de la commedia dell’arte. Une partition virevoltante, créée avec succès à Paris en 1843, où l’auteur de Lucia di Lammermoor montre un vrai talent pour la comédie et renouvelle la forme de l’opera buffa. Si le metteur en scène Damiano Michieletto s’amuse à jouer avec les époques, il conserve la légèreté de l’œuvre et en fait ressortir la tendresse douce-amère. L’une des marques de fabrique de Donizetti, toujours plein d’empathie pour ses personnages, même quand ce sont de vieux barbons.
