When Mascagni's name comes to mind, Peasant's Honor is the first thing that comes to mind, although the Mass, which suggests radiation and brilliance by its title, and puts Gloria in the center, can provide a similarly uplifting experience. The author began composing the work in 1887, but the work process was interrupted by an order: the Peasant's Honor . It is no wonder that the flowing melody of the mass, the emotional, romantic arcs, the moments of almost dramatic tension and the sometimes personal chamber sound - think of the brilliant violin solo before the Benedictus! – in some places the student is reminded of  Peasant Honor .
The work, written for two male soloists, orchestra and choir, was finally presented by Mascagni in 1888 at a performance by his students in Cerignola, southern Italy. A few years later, this work was used to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the construction of the magnificent Orvieto Cathedral.

The world really went crazy for Pietro Mascagni's one-act play: he burst onto the opera scene unexpectedly, as well as his daring, new-themed opera, which was imitated by hundreds after him, and with which he achieved success that he could not surpass with any other work later. Mascagni created one of the main works of verismo : in his opera, we can see everyday heroes who become victims of their own uncontrollable passion.

Messa di Gloria
Mascagni nevéről elsősorban a Parasztbecsület jut eszünkbe, pedig hasonlóan felemelő élményt nyújthat a címe által is sugárzást, ragyogást sejtető mise, mely a Gloriát helyezi a középpontba. A szerző 1887-ben kezdte komponálni a művet, a munkafolyamatot azonban megszakította egy megrendelés: éppen a Parasztbecsületé. Nem csoda, ha a mise áradó dallamvilága, az érzelmes, romantikus ívek, a szinte drámai feszültségű pillanatok és az olykor személyes kamarahangzás – gondoljunk a briliáns hegedűszólóra a Benedictus előtt! – helyenként a Parasztbecsületre emlékeztetik a hallgatót. 
A két férfi szólistára, zenekarra és énekkarra írt művet Mascagni végül 1888-ban mutatta be tanítványainak előadásában a dél-olaszországi Cerignolában. Néhány év múlva pedig ezzel a művel ünnepelték a pompázatos orvietói katedrális megépítésének 600. évfordulóját.

Pietro Mascagni egyfelvonásosáért valósággal megőrült a világ: váratlanul robbant be az operaéletbe ő maga, és merész, új témát feszegető operája is, amelyet százak utánoztak utána, s amellyel olyan sikereket aratott, amelyeket később egyetlen művével sem tudott túlszárnyalni. Mascagni a verismo egyik fő művét alkotta meg: operájában mindennapi hősöket láthatunk, akik saját, fékezhetetlen szenvedélyüknek válnak áldozatává.
Rabul ejtő, érzéki muzsika, magával ragadó, feszült dráma. Szerelem, félténység - és bosszú.
