Composed as a “rescue opera” in the spirit of the French Revolution, Beethoven’s only opera “ Fidelio“ the overcoming of arbitrariness and tyranny shaped power structures by a death-defying woman: Leonore. Disguised as a man and using the alias Fidelio, she manages to free her husband Florestan from the clutches of his adversary Don Pizarro. This figure has been stylized into a monument throughout history; the freedom pathos sung about in the opera has been appropriated and ideologically monopolized by the most diverse political systems since the day of the premiere. What was freedom in the past, what is it today? What shackles bind us at this time? Paul-Georg Dittrich's production is a journey through time and at the same time an impetus to face the probing questions of one's own social responsibility based on Beethoven's Freedom Opera.
