Na het succes van vorig jaar hebben we besloten om Vliegende Hollander opnieuw te gaan spelen. Deze zomer zal Vliegende Hollander van 31 juli t/m 12 septembe...

The Skipper of the Flying Dutchman wants to be the first skipper at all costs to reach the East Indies via the shortest route, namely around the Cape. The Dutchman is in a hurry and decides to set sail on Easter Sunday. His crew does not want to leave, because when the church bells are ringing, no one is allowed to set sail. Around the Cape, the ship is caught in a terrible storm, but the captain swears that he will complete his journey. Cursed by the devil , he and his crew must sail the seas forever . 
The saga of the Flying Dutchman is partly made famous by Richard Wagner's opera of the same name. Niek Idelenburg takes up the challenge of composing a new chamber opera. His music can be described as a fusion of neo-baroque and modern classical. 

Some musical principles:

In the Baroque period, the 'tritone' symbolized 'evil'. A tritone, also called 'diabolo in musica' (devil in music) is an interval such as the distance between bf. Composers like Berlioz in his Faust; Benjamin Britten in his 'War Requiem' and Saint Saens in his 'Dance Macabre' used the interval to portray hell and damnation. Idelenburg also uses it as a thematic starting point for the Devil. 

Musically Bach is also called 'God'. When God calls upon humanity to have faith, we hear her doing so with a famous choral melody. Other references from Idelenburg to Bach resound in the triangle God-Schipper-Senta; in addition to a dramatic, they thus form a musical 3-unit.

Although it is a newly composed opera, Wagner should not be missing in this Flying Dutchman. At the age of 21, he made his opera in 2 months and composed an overture consisting of parts that also return later in his opera. Some of this can be heard after the prologue. Music by Wagner in a new sound idiom for small ensemble.

De Schipper van de Vliegende Hollander wil koste wat kost als eerste schipper Oost Indië bereiken via de kortste route, namelijk rond de Kaap. De Hollander heeft haast en besluit al op Paaszondag uit te varen. Zijn bemanning wil niet vertrekken, want als de kerkklokken luiden mag niemand uitvaren. Rond de Kaap komt het schip in een verschrikkelijke storm terecht, maar de kapitein zweert dat hij zijn reis zal volbrengen. Vervloekt door de duivel moet hij en zijn bemanning eeuwig blijven rondvaren op zee. 
In de barokperiode stond de 'tritonus' symbool voor het 'kwaad'. Een tritonus, ook wel 'diabolo in musica' (duivel in muziek) genoemd is een interval zoals bv de afstand tussen b-f. Componisten als Berlioz in zijn Faust; Benjamin Britten in zijn 'War Requiem' en Saint Saens in zijn 'Dance Macabre' gebruikten het interval om hel en verdoemenis uit te beelden. Ook Idelenburg gebruikt het als thematisch uitgangspunt voor de Duivel. 

Bach wordt in muzikaal opzicht ook wel 'God' genoemd. Als God de mensheid oproept om vertrouwen te hebben, horen we haar dat doen met een beroemde choral melodie. Andere verwijzingen van Idelenburg naar Bach klinken door in de driehoek God-Schipper-Senta; zij vormen daarmee naast een dramatische, een muzikale 3-eenheid.

Al is het een nieuw gecomponeerde opera, Wagner mocht niet ontbreken in deze Vliegende Hollander. Hij maakte op 21 jarige leeftijd zijn opera in 2 maanden tijd en componeerde een ouverture bestaande uit delen die ook later terugkomen in zijn opera. Een deel hiervan is te horen na de proloog. Muziek van Wagner in een nieuw klankidioom voor klein ensemble.
