"The heavenly life" is the title of the song from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn", which Mahler set to music in the final movement of his fourth symphony for soprano voice. "We enjoy the heavenly pleasures, therefore we avoid the earthly," the text begins. But the image of the heavenly land of milk and honey is deceptive. In the course of the symphony, Mahler's music tells of the breaks in this perspective, so that the symphony – today probably Mahler's most popular – leaves a mixed impression. The work of Franz Schubert is also permeated by doubts and ruptures. Some of his songs can be heard in orchestrated versions at this concert, and the congenially orchestrated F minor Fantasy for piano four hands can also be rediscovered as an orchestral work.
