When the French mélodie was at its height during the Third Republic (1870-1940), notably through the work of Duparc, Chausson and Fauré, it was nevertheless a genre that composers approached with various different objectives: to please the general public and thereby obtain commercial success; to demonstrate their skills with a view to impressing the opera house directors; to woo the upper classes in order to attract patronage; or else to create a perfect work of art, a jewel providing a perfect setting for a precious stone: the poem. Around Massenet, a whole generation of composers tried to combine those different aims into a single artistic achievement.

Benché la mélodie francese ottenga pienamente la propria patente di nobiltà sotto la Terza Repubblica, in particolare grazie ai lavori di Duparc, Chausson o Fauré, essa rimane un territorio in cui i compositori si inoltrano con obiettivi diversi: piacere al grande pubblico e ottenere successo commerciale; dimostrare le proprie capacità al fine di convincere i direttori di teatri d’opera; sedurre l’alta società per ottenerne il sostegno; o, ancora, creare un’opera perfetta, un gioiello in cui quella pietra preziosa che è la poesia sia idealmente valorizzata dalla musica. Intorno a Massenet, un’intera generazione naviga tra queste mete diverse e cerca di riunirle per produrre un’unica riuscita artistica.
