In 1719 Georg Friedrich Handel was appointed director of the Royal Academy of Music, a private opera company run by English nobles. In order to stir the interest of the audience, the shareholders invited Giovanni Bononcini to London, whose catchy operas had success all over Europe. The musical competition split London into two parties: the German was preferred by the royal court, the Italian was favored by a noble clique around the Duke of Marlborough. The fact that the fight ended in Handel's favor is due to the brilliant success of Giulio Cesare in Egitto, which became his most successful opera.
