The Gurrelieder are about a simple story of love and death, full of
romanticism.
In line with the 8th
  of Mahler, the work
makes us hear an unexpected Schoenberg,
far from the works for which it is
usually knows.
A magnificent harmonic style, a wide range of orchestral colors, make this work
chosen by Esa-Pekka Salonen, to celebrate, at the
head of his orchestra, the Philharmonia, his own
birthday (he will be 60), is irresistible.
Never before given in the Basilica, these
Gurrelieder by Schoenberg, a musical monument, conducted for its return to the Festival by the
maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen, are the event
50 years old!

Les Gurrelieder ont pour sujet une simple histoire d’amour et de mort, toute empreinte de
romantisme.
Dans la lignée de la 8e
 de Mahler, l’œuvre
nous fait entendre un Schoenberg inattendu,
bien loin des œuvres pour lesquelles on le
connaît habituellement.
Un magnifi que style harmonique, un large éventail de couleurs orchestrales, font que cette œuvre
choisie par Esa-Pekka Salonen, pour célébrer, à la
tête de son orchestre, le Philharmonia, son propre
anniversaire (il aura 60 ans), est irrésistible.
