Inspiré d’un fait divers qui défraya la chronique à Jonestown [USA] en 1978, Guru raconte l’histoire d’une secte vivant recluse sur une île. Marie, nouvelle adepte fraîchement arrivée sur l’île, incite les disciples à résister au gourou. Voyant son arrivée comme un ultime défi à relever, Guru, le gourou de la secte, décide que le "grand voyage" qu’il a tant annoncé va enfin avoir lieu. 

Décrivant avec beaucoup de finesse les mécanismes en jeu dans les groupes, les conflits de pouvoir, l’argent et le sexe, Laurent Petitgirard et son librettiste Xavier Maurel nous offrent avec Guru une allégorie de nos sociétés modernes, où la manipulation mentale est bien plus présente au quotidien qu’on ne le pense.

« Mettre en scène Guru, c’est avant tout proposer la création d’un grand Opéra français et tisser des liens puissants avec l’Opéra de Nice et son équipe. Mettre en scène le monstre qui par son aura, entraîne dans sa chute tous les disciples de la secte. Traquer ce qui nous séduit en nous détruisant ! Un rêve promis qui devient cauchemar, avec au centre Marie seule en résistance. C’est pour moi la possibilité de prévenir, de dénoncer le mensonge et l’occasion d’organiser autour de ce spectacle des conférences sur le sujet. Une menace pour nos sociétés et malheureusement une possibilité toujours active. »

Pour cette création française, Guru bénéficiera d’un cast de tout premier plan (Armando Noguera, Anaïs Constans pour ne citer qu’eux côté chant, et Sonia Petrovna dans le rôle de Marie), de la présence à la mise en scène d’une des grandes figures du théâtre français et directrice du Théâtre National de Nice, Muriel Mayette-Holtz, et de celle du compositeur en personne à la baguette !

Opera in three acts. Libretto by Xavier Maurel after an original idea by the composer. Premièred at the Szczecin Castle Opera in Poland on 28 September 2018. 

Inspired by a news story that hit the headlines in Jonestown [USA] in 1978, Guru tells the story of a sect living in seclusion on an island. Marie, a new follower recently arrived on the island, incites the disciples to resist the guru. Seeing her arrival as an ultimate challenge to overcome, the Guru decides that the "big journey" he has spoken of so often will finally take place.

Precisely describing the mechanisms at play within groups, conflicts of power, money and sex, through Guru, Laurent Petitgirard and her librettist Xavier Maurel offers us an allegory for our modern societies in which mental manipulation is much more present in our daily lives than we like to think.

"To stage Guru is, above all, to offer the première of a great French opera and weave powerful links with the Nice Opera and its team. To stage the monster who, through his aura, drags all his cult disciples down with him. To hunt down that which seduces us while destroying us! A promised dream which becomes a nightmare, resisted by Marie alone. For me, it allows me to offer a warning and denounce lies – the chance to organise conferences around the show on this subject. A threat for our societies and, unfortunately, a possibility that remains active today."

For this French première, Guru will benefit from a top-rate cast (with the voices of Armando Noguera and Anaïs Constans, to name but a few, alongside Sonia Petrovnain in the role of Marie), along with the presence of one of the major figures of French theatre and the director of the National Theatre of Nice, Muriel Mayette-Holtz, as well as the composer himself conducting the piece !
