The brilliant farcical play by the English playwright Brandon Thomas first saw the light in London on February 29, 1892 and immediately broke all conceivable records - the play ran 1466 times, and the Broadway production of 1893 did not leave the stage for four years in a row. The play was written by Thomas specifically for the comedian William Sidney Penley, who directed the first production and played the role of "Donna Lucia" in it. The production was so successful that Penley made a fortune from the play, which he then invested in his own theatre. It is not surprising that subsequently "Charlie's Aunt" became an almost absolute record holder for film adaptations - today at least thirty film versions in various languages ​​\u200b\u200bof the world are known (from 1925 to 1996).
In Russia, "Aunt Charlie" traces its history back to 1894: P. Orlenev played the role of Babs at the premiere at the famous Korsh Theater. In the same year, the play was first published in Russian translation (by the way, as "Charley's Aunt"). In the USSR, the play received the status of a “folk comedy” called “Hello, I am your aunt” thanks to the 1975 film adaptation. The film was shot according to the original script (director V. Titov acted as a screenwriter), the cast was great (A. Dzhigarkhanyan, M. Kozakov, V. Gaft, T. Vedeneeva, T. Vasilyeva and, of course, A. Kalyagin in the role Babs), the music of V. Kazenin also contributed to the success.
In the Russian musical theater "Aunt Charlie" debuted in 1973. Director Yury Khmelnitsky proposed to the composer Oscar Feltsman to write a musical comedy based on the famous plot. Robert Rozhdestvensky himself took up the verses, and one of the versions of the libretto was created by the most popular satirist of that time, Vladimir Polyakov. Charlie's Aunt was staged for the first time as a musical performance in Krasnodar, and then at the Moscow Operetta Theatre. The "musical" comedy very quickly became a real hit.
