Henry VIII Saint-Saëns

Created in 1883, at a time when French opera was seeking to reinvent itself, Henry VIII is a final homage to the great opera and its characteristic historical frescoes. The play tells the story of the divorce of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, which led to the schism between the Church of England and Rome.

Set aside from lyrical scenes due to the great popularity of Samson and Delilah , Henry VIII nevertheless enjoys a particularly careful orchestral writing, supporting very contrasting lyrical lines: between passion and modesty, jealousy and renunciation, intimacy and solemnity. La Monnaie wants to give back its full place to this essential score by Camille Saint-Saëns, entrusting it to two great defenders of the French repertoire: Alain Altinoglu and Olivier Py.
