Troy is destroyed. The Greek fighters finally return to their homeland with their leader, the Cretan king Idomeneo. But here, too, those returning from the war found no peace. On the way back, their ship gets caught in a heavy storm. To appease the sea god Poseidon, Idomeneo vows to sacrifice the first person he meets after his rescue. Since this person is his own son Idamante, a series of momentous conflicts arises. Idomeneo tries to protect his own son and endangers empire and subjects. Idomeneowas first performed in 1781 and opened the series of seven dramatic masterpieces by Mozart. She humanizes the father's mythical primal conflict, who is supposed to sacrifice his own child, and interprets it as a plea for human autonomy far removed from divine law.

The stage area was designed by the Norwegian artist Rune Guineriussen, who has shaped the appearance of the new season booklet with the photos of his installations. The director is Hungarian Árpád Schilling, one of the most important representatives of the avant-garde of European theatre. The musical director will be the designated chief conductor of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Alexander Soddy. The major roles are cast by an excellent international ensemble of singers. Tenor Lothar Odinius takes on the role of Idomeneo, Jurgita Adamonytė sings Idamante, Sofia Soloviy Elettra, Evgeniya Sotnikova Ilia.
