Fate sempre Barbiere! Sempre Barbiere!», suggerì Beethoven a Rossini incontrandolo a Vienna. «Io confesso che non posso fare a meno di credere che Il barbiere di Siviglia, per abbondanza di vere idee musicali, per verve comica e per verità di declamazione, sia la più bella opera buffa che esista». Così scrisse Verdi a un critico francese nel 1898. Rossini non conobbe mai un successo maggiore del Barbiere. Ancora oggi quel lavoro, che debuttò nel 1816 al Teatro Argentina di Roma, è l’opera buffa più famosa nel mondo. Praticamente ogni suo numero è un gioiello musicale: «Largo al factotum» (Figaro), «La calunnia» (Don Basilio), «Una voce poco fa» (Rosina), il concertato «Zitti zitti, piano piano» e altro ancora.

Thus wrote Giuseppe Verdi to a French critic in 1898. Rossini never composed a more successful opera than Barbiere. Still nowadays the work, which premiered at Rome’s Teatro Argentina in 1816, is the most famous opera comedy worldwide. Virtually every piece in it is a musical gem, including Figaro’s “Largo al factotum”, Basilio’s “La calunnia”, Rosina’s “Una voce poco fa”, the ensemble “Zitti zitti, piano piano”, and more.
