En 1774, Christoph Willibald Gluck se rend à Paris, à l’invitation de Marie-Antoinette. Le compositeur a déjà réformé l’opera seria, composant une musique qui suit le drame et son expression sans l’étouffer sous les ornementations inutiles. À Paris, Gluck va révolutionner la tragédie lyrique. Tournant la page de Lully et de Rameau, il va profondément redéfinir le style français. Iphigénie en Tauride est l’expression de cette révolution artistique.

Iphigénie n’a pas péri à Aulis. Elle n’a pas été sacrifiée par son père Agamemnon afin d’assurer des vents favorables à sa flotte en partance pour la Guerre de Troie. Diane, la déesse de la chasse, a eu pitié d’elle. Elle a remplacé in extremis la jeune fille par une biche, puis l’a menée en Tauride où elle a fait d’elle l’une de ses prêtresses. Là-bas, Iphigénie vit loin du monde et de sa famille - les Atrides - dont l’histoire a toujours été marquée par un cycle de violences incluant meurtres, parricides, fratricides et incestes. Un jour, elle voit resurgir un fantôme en la personne de son frère Oreste - assassin de sa mère, poursuivi par les déesses de la vengeance - qui échoue sur le rivage. Iphigénie va alors devoir faire face à son passé traumatisant.

Dès les premières notes, Gluck déclenche sur scène une tempête, dont les éléments déchaînés semblent tout droit sortis de l’âme d’Iphigénie. La suite ne lasse pas de nous emporter : Iphigénie en Tauride est une course contre la mort. Habitée par la musique de Gluck, la langue française acquiert une puissance lyrique stupéfiante. Au siècle suivant, elle stupéfiera la génération romantique - qui vouera au compositeur allemand une admiration sans faille - dont Berlioz : “Le jour où, après une anxieuse attente, il me fut enfin permis d’entendre Iphigénie en Tauride, je jurai, en sortant de l’Opéra, que malgré père, mère, oncles, tantes, grands-parents et amis, je serais musicien.”

Iphigenia did not perish at Aulis. She was not sacrificed by her father Agamemnon to ensure favorable winds for his fleet leaving for the Trojan War. Diana, the goddess of the hunt, took pity on her. She replaced the young girl in extremis with a doe, then took her to Tauride where she made her one of her priestesses. There, Iphigenia lives far from the world and from her family - the Atrides - whose history has always been marked by a cycle of violence including murder, parricide, fratricide and incest. One day, she sees a ghost reappear in the person of her brother Orestes - assassin of her mother, pursued by the goddesses of revenge - who washes up on the shore. Iphigénie will then have to face her traumatic past.

From the very first notes, Gluck unleashes a storm on stage, the raging elements of which seem straight out of Iphigenia's soul. The sequel never tires of carrying us away: Iphigenia in Tauride is a race against death. Inhabited by the music of Gluck, the French language acquires an astounding lyrical power. In the following century, she would astonish the romantic generation - who would devote unfailing admiration to the German composer - including Berlioz: “The day when, after an anxious wait, I was finally allowed to hear Iphigénie en Tauride, I swore of the Opera, that despite father, mother, uncles, aunts, grandparents and friends, I would be a musician.
