The harsh story about honor and dishonor, about love, crime and forgiveness reveals terrible events in a Moravian village. Jenufa is expecting a child from the irresponsible and alcoholic Shteva. Steva's brother Laca also loves Jenufa, however, not getting her reciprocated love, he mutilates Jenufa's face with a knife in a fit of jealousy so that his brother will never look at it again. When Jenufa confesses to Kesteriene what kind of relationship she has with Števa, the stepmother does everything to hide the disgrace from the neighbors. In an effort not to prevent Lac from taking Jenufa as his wife, Kesteriene secretly drowns Jenufa's newborn child. Is it possible to forgive the unforgivable?

The premiere of the production by director Alvjas Hermanis took place in 2014 at the Brussels opera house La Monnaie . The performance was created in collaboration with the Teatro Communale di Bologna . In Leoš Janáček's masterpiece, Alvis Hermanis especially highlights the ethnographic magnificence characteristic of the culture of the Central European region, playing out the Moravian color without losing the dramatic tension so characteristic of the drama of Jenufa's life. The performance of the dancers of the Latvian National Ballet complements the singing of the soloists in the performance.

Jenufa, based on Gabriela Preisova's drama Her Stepdaughter, is the most famous opera of the Czech composer Leoš Janáček. It premiered in 1904 in Brno; This is Jenūfa's third production at the Latvian National Opera.

Skaudrais stāsts par godu un negodu, par mīlestību, noziegumu un piedošanu atklāj baisus notikumus kādā Morāvijas ciematiņā. Jenūfa gaida bērnu no bezatbildīgā un grādīgus dzērienus cienošā Števas. Pēc Gabrielas Preisovas drāmas Viņas pameita veidotā Jenūfa ir čehu komponista Leoša Janāčeka slavenākā opera. Tā pirmizrādīta 1904. gadā Brno; Latvijas Nacionālajā operā šis ir jau trešais Jenūfas iestudējums.
