Paris, in 1830. Four artists lead a bohemian life in an unsanitary attic. One evening, the poet Rodolfo, left alone to complete an article, meets Mimì, his neighbor whose candle has gone out. They fall madly in love. Learning that Mimì suffers from consumption, he prefers to leave her in the hope that a rich lover will take better care of her! Exhausted, she will come back to him to expire in his arms. La Bohème is one of the most popular opera houses in the world today. Based on a novel by Henry Murger, Scenes from Bohemian Life , serialized in 1851, it evokes the poor and hazardous existence of young artists on the margins of society. It was in Turin in 1896 and under the direction of Toscanini, that Puccini met with his second great public success after Manon Lescaut , with the adaptation of the French story by his librettists Illica and Giacosa. The amorous and unhappy adventures of Mimì, Rodolfo and their friends are an opportunity for the composer to exploit the spirit of the Scapigliatura , a bohemian way of life with intense intellectual abundance, which fascinated Italy at the end of the 19th century . The work reveals the genius of the musician who, thanks to a sublime song, an inhabited orchestra and a paroxysmal sense of drama , explores, between carelessness and tragedy, all the diversity of human emotions. His credo is clear: " I love the little things, I can only devote myself to the music of the little things, when they are true, ardent and human, and go straight to the heart ". All is said !
