Opéra-comique in three acts by François-Adrien Boieldieu Libretto by Eugène Scribe after Walter Scott Created at the Opéra-comique on December 10, 1825 The show will be presented in a semi-staged version based on the Opera's production Comique Co-production of the Opéra Comique with the Opéra de Limoges and the Opéra Nice Côte d'Azur Like many composers of the early 19th century, Boieldieu sought out the plot of his Dame blanche from Walter Scott, one of the most popular comic operas in history – it was indeed the first to succeed in surpassing the symbolic bar of 1,000 performances! It must be said that the composer from Rouen had put all the ingredients for success into it: a story full of twists and turns in a Scotland populated by intriguers, lovers, old castles and (false) ghosts, all served by the most inventive music there is. Even Rossini was won over! With its arias alternately virtuoso and lyrical, tender or soaring, La Dame blanche is a bit like the quintessence of the tastes of the time, brilliantly blending dark romanticism and the purest bel canto. After memorable Frasquita in Carmen and Anne Truelove in The Rake's Progress here, Amélie Robins returns to us in the wonderful role of Anna, alongside the great Rossini tenor Patrick Kabongo who will make his debut for us as Georges Brown. Comme beaucoup de compositeurs du début du XIXe siècle, Boieldieu est allé chercher chez Walter Scott l’intrigue de sa Dame blanche, l’un des opéras comiques les plus populaires de l’histoire – ce fut en effet le premier à réussir à dépasser la barre symbolique des 1000 représentations ! Il faut dire que le compositeur rouennais y avait mis tous les ingrédients du succès : une histoire pleine de rebondissements dans une Écosse peuplée d’intrigants, d’amoureux, de vieux châteaux et de (faux) fantômes, le tout servi par la musique la plus inventive qui soit. Même Rossini fut séduit !

Avec ses airs tour à tour virtuoses et lyriques, tendres ou envolés, La Dame blanche est un peu la quintessence des goûts de l’époque, mêlant avec génie le romantisme noir et le belcanto le plus pur. Après de mémorables Frasquita dans Carmen et Anne Truelove dans The Rake’s Progress ici-même, Amélie Robins nous revient dans le merveilleux rôle d’Anna, aux côtés du grand ténor rossinien Patrick Kabongo qui fera ses débuts pour nous en Georges Brown. À la direction musicale, Alexandra Cravero, l’une des encore trop rares cheffes d’orchestre françaises.
