Mit der Uraufführung der Oper «La fida ninfa» wurde am 6. Januar 1732 einer der prachtvollsten wie kostspieligsten Theaterbauten des 18. Jahrhunderts, das Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, eröffnet. Dass der Auftrag hierzu an Antonio Vivaldi erging, war zunächst weniger der Reputation des Venezianers, vor allem das Musiktheater betreffend, zu verdanken, als vielmehr der Verhinderung des ursprünglich für die Vertonung des Librettos vorgesehenen Giuseppe Maria Orlandini. Vermutlich in weniger als zwei Monaten kompositorischer Arbeit entstanden, wurde das Werk 1737 zur Feier der Geburt der ersten Tochter von Kaiserin Maria Theresia, Maria Elisabeth, am Theater am Kärntnertor in Wien nachgespielt – und somit zur ersten Oper Vivaldis, die in jener Stadt erklang, in der er wenige Jahre später seinen Lebensabend verbringen sollte.

In den drei Akten der «treuen Nymphe» erklingt eine Reihe großartiger Da-Capo-Arien, die von der vollen Reife ihres Schöpfers zeugen. Kraftvoll, farbenfroh und stets innovativ verklärt Vivaldis Feder zahlreiche Codes und Klischees, von denen das dazugehörige Textbuch – es stammte aus der Hand des Marchese Francesco Maffei, dem Bauherrn des neuen Veroneser Theaters – nur so strotzt. Noch ungewöhnlicher ist, dass Vivaldi das außergewöhnliche künstlerische Niveau seines Werks auch in einer Reihe von Ensembles (ein Duett, ein Trio, ein Quartett und mehrere kurze Chöre) unter Beweis stellte.

Gesanglich stellt «La fida ninfa» eine der herausforderndsten Partituren des «prete rosso» dar. Die Arien der Nymphe Licori und ihres verloren geglaubten Geliebten Morasto, markieren «den Höhepunkt Vivaldi’scher Vocalità» und konkurrieren in ihrer Virtuosität untereinander. Die tieferen Stimmen profitieren von einer ausgewogenen Behandlung, mit so denkwürdigen Nummern wie «Chi dal cielo o dalla sorte», einer Aria di bravura des Piraten Oralto oder dem tief bewegten «Deh, ti piega, deh consenti» des Narete, eine der schönsten Tenorarien des Komponisten. In diesem Juwel barocker Gesangskunst vermittelt Vivaldi das herzzerreißende Flehen des alten Hirten zu Füßen seines Unterdrückers durch den Einsatz eines synkopischen Motivs, das von den Violinen unermüdlich wiederholt wird, während die Stimme ihr Gebet im Adagio singt, um schließlich geradezu lautmalerisch in ruckartigen Vokalisen zusammenzubrechen. Kein Wunder, dass dieses wunderbare Stück Musik zum Schluss des letztjährigen Cesti-Finalkonzerts noch einmal wiederholt werden musste – bescherte es doch dem Briten Laurence Kilsby den wohlverdienten 1. Preis.

With the premiere of the opera "La fida ninfa" on January 6, 1732, one of the most magnificent and expensive theater buildings of the 18th century, the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, was opened. The fact that Antonio Vivaldi was commissioned to do so was initially less due to the reputation of the Venetian, especially in terms of music theater, than to Giuseppe Maria Orlandini, who was originally intended to set the libretto to music, being prevented from doing so. Probably created in less than two months of compositional work, the work was performed in 1737 to celebrate the birth of Empress Maria Theresa's first daughter, Maria Elisabeth, at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna - and thus became the first opera by Vivaldi to be performed in that city. where he was to spend the rest of his life a few years later.

In the three acts of the "faithful nymph" there are a number of magnificent da capo arias that testify to the full maturity of their creator. Powerful, colorful and always innovative, Vivaldi's pen transfigures numerous codes and clichés, of which the accompanying libretto - it came from the hand of Marchese Francesco Maffei, the builder of the new Veronese theater - is just bursting with it. Even more unusually, Vivaldi also demonstrated the exceptional artistic level of his work in a series of ensembles (a duet, a trio, a quartet and several short choruses).

Vocally, «La fida ninfa» is one of the most challenging scores of «prete rosso». The arias of the nymph Licori and her long-lost lover Morasto mark «the high point of Vivaldi's vocalità» and compete with one another in their virtuosity. The lower voices benefit from a balanced treatment, with such memorable numbers as "Chi dal cielo o dalla sorte", an aria di bravura by the pirate Oralto, or the deeply moving "Deh, ti piega, deh consenti" by Narete, one of the most beautiful tenor arias of the composer. In this jewel of baroque vocal artistry, Vivaldi conveys the heartrending supplication of the old shepherd at the feet of his oppressor through the use of a syncopated motif, repeated tirelessly by the violins as the voice sings its prayer in the Adagio, finally collapsing almost onomatopoeically in jerky vocalises. No wonder that this wonderful piece of music had to be repeated again at the end of last year's Cesti final concert - after all, it brought the British Laurence Kilsby the well-deserved 1st prize.
