Donna Leonora, the daughter of the Marchese of Calatrava, loves Don Alvaro, the son of a Spanish nobleman and an Inca princess. They decide to flee together because Leonora's family does not agree to their connection. However, they are provided by Leonora's father. Alvaro tosses his pistol to avoid a fight. A shot goes off and the Marchese dies. A tumult ensues in which the lovers are separated. The Marchese's second son, Don Carlo, swears blood revenge on his sister and Don Alvaro. Leonora finds refuge in a monastery, and Alvaro enters the army under a false name and fights in Italy. There he meets Don Carlo and befriends him. From entanglements on the battlefield, Don Carlo learns Alvaro's true identity. But before he can start his revenge, he loses sight of Don Alvaro. He decides to retire to the monastery and randomly chooses the convent in which Leonora lives. Don Carlo has stayed on the heels of his opponent and finally finds the target of his revenge. At the moment of death Leonora sees the love of her life again. In this spectacular opera, Verdi tells the story of a family against the backdrop of a world at war. An incited society is shown in monumental choir scenes, which form a harsh contrast to the private encounters. Fate inexorably brings everyone together, even threads that have been left lying around for decades. The consequences of arrogance, discrimination, fanaticism and an exaggerated notion of honor are borne by people who become entangled. Verdi and Piave do not release their heroes from responsibility for love and death.
