A forbidden love, she of noble blood and he "of mulatto" (albeit of "royal lineage"), an accidental gunshot, the death of her father, her brother's inexorable thirst for revenge. A long, fatal chase that separates the two lovers and reunites and separates them forever according to the whims of fate, the true protagonist of a work that for expressive multiplicity, historical framework and types of characters (the religious ones, above all) makes one think to the Betrothed. Except that Manzoni's novel is governed by Providence, while fate can be cruel and mocking, so much so that in the first draft of the work (St. Petersburg, 1862: Verdi was by now acclaimed and requested far beyond the borders) Don Alvaro commits suicide by cursing. For the Milan version, in 1869, the author mitigates the ending in a prayer, but above all inserts a symphony in the opening that will remain among his most famous, a perfect synthesis of an intricate and adventurous drama like few others.

Un amore proibito, lei di sangue nobile e lui “di mulatto” (seppur di “regale stirpe”), un colpo di pistola partito accidentale, la morte del padre di lei la sete inesorabile di vendetta del fratello. Un lungo, fatale inseguimento che separa i due amanti e li ricongiunge e li separa per sempre secondo i capricci del destino, il vero protagonista di un’opera che per molteplicità espressiva, quadro storico e tipologie di personaggi (i religiosi, soprattutto) fa pensare ai Promessi sposi. Solo che il romanzo di Manzoni è retto dalla Provvidenza, mentre il destino può essere crudele e beffardo, tant’è che nella prima stesura dell’opera (San Pietroburgo, 1862: Verdi era ormai acclamato e richiesto ben oltre i confini) Don Alvaro si suicida imprecando. Per la versione Milano, nel 1869, l’autore mitiga il finale in una preghiera, ma soprattutto inserisce in apertura una sinfonia che resterà fra le sue più celebri, sintesi perfetta di una drammaturgie intricata e avventurosa come poche.
