On the occasion of her alleged recovery from tuberculosis, Violetta Valéry throws a lavish party. She feels it very well: This time she may have cheated death once again, but in the end she was given little extra time. The nearness of death gives her the courage to question her life so far. Could young Alfredo Germont's adoring love offer a way out of the adored but lonely life as Paris's most sought-after courtesan? It lures the promise of the long-awaited true love. Alfredo can see past her past, but is that enough for a radical new start? Despite the social attitude and the premonition of death, Violetta dares to venture into the unknown. Amore e morte - love and death– Giuseppe Verdi initially wanted his opera based on the novel The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas the Elder. call J. A title that, due to its vagueness, could apply to a large part of the opera repertoire, but rarely seems as appropriate as for the story of Violetta Valéry, which unfolds in the areas of tension between true love and love for sale, longing for death and fear of death. From the very first sounds of the overture, Verdi's music focuses on the inner experience of the protagonist, whose constant companion is death, yet who rebels, full of strength and joie de vivre.

After the disastrous failure of the premiere in 1853, La Traviata became one of the most popular operas in music history, in keeping with the assessment of its creator: »As a professional I consider Rigoletto my best work, but as a lover I consider La Traviata .«
