La traviata is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, taken from the play by Alexandre Dumas (son) The lady of the camellias.
The first performance took place at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on 6 March 1853. The beginning of the opera pleased the public, but from the second act onwards it began to wane and the overall outcome, according to Verdi himself, was a fiasco.
The composer repeatedly claimed (as he had already hinted before the debut), that the responsibility for the lack of enthusiasm of the public was not attributable to the music, but to the singers, who were considered not height both vocally and physically.
In disruption with the administration of the La Fenice Theater, guilty of not having accepted his criticisms on the choice of artists, Verdi decided not to authorize other staging of "La Traviata" if the role of Violetta, Alfredo and Giorgio Germont were not been worn by artists physically and technically suited to the roles.
Due to the strong criticism of the bourgeois society of the time, the opera, in the theaters of Florence, Bologna, Parma, Naples and Rome, was reworked by censorship and staged with some totally distorted pieces. Also to escape censorship, La Traviata had to be moved as a chronological setting from the 19th century to the 18th century.

La traviata è un'opera in tre atti di Giuseppe Verdi su libretto di Francesco Maria Piave, tratto dalla pièce teatrale di Alexandre Dumas (figlio) La signora delle camelie.
La prima rappresentazione avvenne al Teatro La Fenice di Venezia il 6 marzo 1853. L'inizio dell'opera piacque al pubblico, ma dal secondo atto in poi cominciò a scemare e l'esito complessivo, a detta dello stesso Verdi, fu un fiasco.
Il compositore sostenne ripetutamente (come aveva già lasciato presagire prima del debutto), che la responsabilità dello scarso entusiasmo del pubblico non era imputabile alla musica, ma ai cantanti, reputati non altezza sia vocalmente che fisicamente.
In rotta con l'amministrazione del Teatro La Fenice, rea di non aver accolto le sue critiche sulla scelta degli artisti, Verdi decise di non autorizzare altre messe in scena de "La Traviata" se i panni di Violetta, Alfredo e Giorgio Germont non fossero stati indossati da artisti fisicamente e tecnicamente adeguati ai ruoli.
A causa della forte critica alla società borghese del tempo, l'opera, nei teatri di Firenze, Bologna, Parma, Napoli e Roma, fu rimaneggiata dalla censura e messa in scena con alcuni pezzi totalmente stravolti. Sempre per sfuggire alla censura, La Traviata dovette essere spostata come ambientazione cronologica dal XIX secolo al XVIII secolo.
