Giuseppe Verdi was looking for a new, daring subject when he came across the novel »La Dame aux Camélias« by Alexandre Dumas the Younger. Then, in the spring of 1852, he saw The Lady of the Camellias, transformed from poet to play, at the Vaudeville Theater in Paris. The impression strengthened his decision to use the material for his next opera: the story about prostitution and love, illness and death gave him the opportunity to reformulate his great theme, love that fails due to social conditions. He commissioned Francesco Maria Piave to write the libretto and completed the score in just six weeks. »La Traviata« became his most successful opera - also at the Hamburg State Opera.

Violetta is the most sought-after courtesan in the Parisian half-world. But meeting Alfredo puts their drunken life in question: they fall in love and try to build a life together away from the fast-paced pleasures of the city. However, Violetta won't let go of her past. Alfredo's father persuades them to separate for the sake of family honor. Alfredo, who does not know the true background of her decision, publicly humiliates Violetta. When they both find each other again, Violetta has no more time.
