La Traviata has sometimes been characterized as a “waltz in three acts” . In his most famous opera, Verdi extracts the entire spectrum of human emotions from triple time. French director Richard Brunel returns to Klagenfurt after the overwhelming success of Dialogues des Carmélites and directs Verdi's masterpiece with Claudia Boyle in the title role. When it premiered in 1853 in the Venetian opera house La Fenice, La Traviata becamecoldly received by the audience. A contemporary subject on the opera stage, plus the love and death of a noble courtesan, was still scandalous at the time the work was published. What was also new was that the suffering of the title heroine, who was suffering from tuberculosis, was used to deal with topics such as the conflict between bourgeois respectability and the frivolous tinsel of "high society". Despite the resistance of the censors, it was not long before the triumph of the “lost way” – the literal translation of the title – continues to this day. This is due not only to Verdi's immediately engaging music, but also to the fact that it reflects the ups and downs of modern human existence.
