Richard III (Giorgio Battistelli/Robert Carsen)

With thirteen solo singers, an orchestra full of brass and thirty percussions divided into two groups, Giorgio Battistelli tackles the comedy Le baruffe chiozzotte (1762). In the 1920s, Carlo Goldoni's witty farce - a sketch on the daily life of fishermen in the lagoon village of Chioggia - was set to music by Franco Leoni and Gian Francesco Malipiero. Battistelli's work, commissioned by the Fenice, was supposed to make its world premiere in 2020, but was postponed due to the epidemic. Thoroughbred Venetian director Damiano Michieletto helped the composer adapt the sung text, whose marginal dialect already sounded exotic to eighteenth-century urban audiences.
