Who hasn't dreamed of healing their lovesickness with a medicine? Preferably one that makes love reciprocated...?
Nemorino is unhappily in love: the rich and self-confident Adina is unattainable for him, the shy farmer. However, when the traveling quack Dulcamara praises a love potion, Nemorino sees his hour come: not knowing that Dulcamara has cheated on him and that the love potion is nothing but a bottle of wine, Nemorino trusts that he can finally win Adina's heart. But now events are overturning: Adina surprisingly accepts the marriage proposal of the daring Sergeant Belcore and wants to marry him on the same day. However, the love potion should only take effect one day after taking it – when Dulcamara has fled. In desperation, Nemorino enlists as a soldier to get the money for a love potion that works immediately.

With his love potion , Donizetti created one of the most touching and successful musical comedies in bel canto style. Nemorino's melancholic romance "Una furtiva lagrima" has gone down in operatic history as one of the most beautiful pieces of music for tenors.
