French opera literature of the Romantic period has a wide variety of works, but one opera from its portfolio is particularly mysterious. Jacques Offenbach composed 99 operettas during his prolific life, but only one opera in the true sense of the word. Hoffmann's short stories are a mysterious confession of the poet Hoffmann, who recalls his loves in a fantasy context. As an ordinary mortal, he reworkes, beautifies, deforms his past, but above all he dreams about it, idealizes it and intoxicates himself with the beauty of his three muses - Antonia, Olympia and Giulietta. As is the case in life, reality is much harsher than fantasy and awakening more bitter than dream.
